Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) A bell-shaped bronze incense box (kogo) or incense burner (koro) with chased and inlaid iroe-takazogan (copper, gold, silver) decoration of a dragon chasing a pearl surrounded by petals amidst crashing waves and clouds around the rim, The lid with raised "nails" and a grip formed by two dragon heads surmounted by a tama, the incised mark of the Nogawa Company (of Kyoto) on the base, fine patina. H. 13.8 cm Slight wear, and a partly detached inlay on the lid, one nail missing.
