Historical background. A major patron of the arts under the Restoration, the Duchesse de Berry maintained close links with the Royal Sèvres Manufactory, from which she placed numerous orders for both objects of use and ceremonial pieces. On 31 July 1821, she ordered two small blue-bottomed Medici vases decorated with gilded friezes, based on a model chosen in the shop. The pieces were delivered in January 1822 for the annual exhibition of the products of the royal manufactures. To decorate the vases, Isidore-Laurent Deroy (Paris 1797- id. 1886) was commissioned to produce four coloured landscape drawings entitled "Vues de Rosny". Two of these compositions are now in the archives of the Sèvres manufactory and correspond to the views on these vases. Photos attached. They are reproduced in the exhibition catalogue: Entre cour et jardin. Marie-Caroline, Duchess of Berry. Musée de l'Île-de-France. Sceaux 2007. Page 153 no. 107 and page 155 no. 111. Bibliography : Archives. Cité de la céramique. Sèvres. - Registres des pièces de commandes. Appraisal sheet of the pieces entered in the sales shop on 1 December 1821 (Pb5 registration no. 168: 53) with the description "2 Médicis vases 5eGr blue background frieze with gold base and glaze. Bruni aplats". Despite the absence of a visible painter's signature on these vases, research carried out in the painters' work registers (Vj' 28 folio 28) revealed, in December 1821, the entry "Mr Langlacé Paysagiste, 2 vases Médicis pour cartel de paysage vue du château de Rosny" (Mr Langlacé Landscape Artist, 2 Medici vases for landscape cartel view of the château de Rosny), which means that the landscapes were executed by him. Jean-Baptiste-Gabriel Langlacé (1786-1864) active from 1806 to 1845. Specialist landscape painter.
