Sisowath Monivong was the fourteenth son of King Sisowath I. He was born in Phnom Penh. He was born in Phnom Penh, which had become the new capital. In 1904, his father Prince Sisowath acceded to the throne. In 1906, Monivong accompanied his father to France, where he received military training at Saint-Maixent. He then embarked on a military career, notably with the 2nd Foreign Legion Regiment in Saïda, Algeria, where he became a captain. When his father died, Monivong, the eldest surviving son of the late King, abandoned his ambition to become the first Asian general in the French army and acceded to the throne on 9 August 1927.
French Indochina is a territory of the former French Colonial Empire, the most populous and richest within that Empire. Officially called the Indochinese Union and then the Indochinese Federation, it was given a common status in 1887 by bringing together, until its disappearance in 1954, various entities dominated by France in the Far East: three now independent countries in South-East Asia, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, as well as a small portion of Chinese territory in what is now Guangdong province. It encompassed several territories conquered between 1858 and 1907 by France as part of its expansion in East Asia. CV
