Elizabeth I was born on 7 September 1533 at Placentia Palace in London and died on 24 March 1603 at Richmond Palace in the same city. She was Queen of England and Ireland from 1558 until her death. She was the daughter of King Henry VIII, and the fifth and last member of the Tudor dynasty on the English throne. When her mother Anne Boleyn was executed three years after her birth, she lost her title of princess, which she had received at birth and which was enshrined in the Second Act of Succession. His half-brother Edward VI appointed his cousin Joan Grey as his successor by means of a letter patent, thus ruling out her half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth from succession to the throne. However, Edward VI's letter patent was interpreted as an act of treason and Joan Grey was executed. Mary - daughter of Henry VIII and the Catholic Catherine of Aragon - became Queen in July 1553. Elizabeth succeeded her five years later, after spending almost two months in prison for her alleged support of Protestant rebels and more than four years under house arrest, between Woodstock Palace and Hatfield Palace.
