Description
LARGE "tombeau" shaped COMMODE in violet wood veneer opening to five drawers on three rows with crossbars decorated with brass fluting. The top is of Aleppo breccia marble with double mouldings and beaks. Exceptional chased and varnished bronze ornamentation: drop handles with leafy rosettes, radiating lock escutcheons, leafy falls adorned with the remains of a lion surmounting a dolphin in the waves, lion-protruding feet, lower "bridge and moustache" drawer and sides adorned with leafy floral cartouches. Fir wood frame, walnut drawers. Iron mark "AI" in a circle, probably an owner's mark. By Mathieu Criaerd, 1689 - 1776, received maitre in 1738 (not stamped) Louis XV period, probably around 1730, before Criaerd's mastery H. 91 cm - W. 152.5 cm - D. 71 cm JB-HL Minor dents and missing veneer, inner nuts on handles changed. Several very similar chests of drawers stamped by Mathieu Criaerd are known, notably Sale, Sotheby's Paris, 28 June 2022, n°74.
