Description
Two round stoneware cups with side handles (originally with lids): -One in pale grey stoneware, with a thin body covered in a grey-black slip (iron oxide), with three horizontal lines in relief, the opening slightly narrowed, light combed motifs on the foot and incised latticework lines at the base. -One in dark brown stoneware covered with a grey-black slip, with patches of greenish glaze (accidental - ash fallout during firing), with a narrow neck decorated with two lines in relief. Korea, kingdom of Gaya (Kaya) or Silla, 5th/6th century H. 8.7 cm and 9.5 cm LM A few tiny chips to the lip on one. A comparable example (of this model, and of the first bowl in particular) in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, L.5-1977, published in: Korean Art from the Gompertz and other Collections in the Fitzwilliam Museum, A Complete Catalogue, 2005, p.33 (cat. no. 6).
