Ary Bitter, originally from Marseille, enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1902, where he trained under Ernest-Louis Barrias whilst working in Jules Coutan’s studio. From 1910 onwards, he took part in the Salon des Artistes Français, winning the gold medal there in 1924. The Susse company published twenty-nine of Bitter’s designs during the interwar period.
