Christophe Thomas DEGEORGE (Blanzat 1786 - Clermont Ferrand 1854) Briseis weeping for Patroclus Original canvas and stretcher Height : 27 cm Width : 34 cm Without frame Old restorations and dents Our painting is Thomas Degeorge's sketch for the large format with which he competed for the Prix de Rome Prix de Rome competition in 1815, now in the Musée Bargoin in Clermont-Ferrand (Bibliography: Philippe Grunchec, "Les Concours des Prix de Rome 1797-1863, Tome II", Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, Paris, 1989, pages 55 to 57). The final composition shows slight variations, but the central group is very similar. Degeorge was inspired here by his master Jacques-Louis David. The subject is taken from the Illiad, Book XIX. During the Trojan War, the Greek Patroclus was killed by the Trojan Hector. In conclamatio, Briseis mourns the dead hero, while Achilles rises from his lethargy and prepares to return to to battle.
