François Joseph HEIM (Belfort, 1787- Paris, 1865) Charles X distributing awards to artists exhibiting at the 1824 Salon in the Louvre Canvas Height: 30.5 cm Width: 40.2 cm On the reverse of the frame, the remainder of a label from the Universal Exhibition Expert : Cabinet TURQUIN Provenance : Anonymous sale, Montpellier, 27 April 1974. Bibliography : J.-P. Cuzin, "François-Joseph Heim (1787-1865): peintre d'esquisses", Bulletin de la Société d'Histoire de l'Art français, 1991, published in 1992, quoted p. 207 and 217 note 29, fig.19. Our painting is a sketch of the painting in the Louvre. Jean-Pierre Cuzin states "the painter represents his father-in-law, the sculptor Cartellier, receiving a medal from the hands of the King". At the centre of the crowd of artists represented, Charles X presents the decoration of the Order of Saint-Michel to the sculptor Pierre Cartellier. The painter Carle Vernet had just been decorated. Among the personalities surrounding the the king included Viscount Sosthène de La Rochefoucauld, in charge of the Fine Arts department de Forbin, director of the Museums. The public included around a hundred renowned painters and sculptors such as J.-A.-D. Ingres, J.-B. Isabey, N. Gosse, A.-J. Gros, F. Gérard, F.-J. Bosio, L.-L. Boilly, J.-L. Ducis, M.-M. Drolling, E. Vigée-Lebrun, N.-A. Taunay, as well as the composers F.-A. Boëldieu, G. Rossini and L.-S. Cherubini.
