Nicolas de STAEL (1914-1955) Composition, 1942 Pastel and charcoal on paper, signed and dated 42 lower right. 23.5 x 31.5 cm. Bibliography: Françoise de Stael, "Nicolas de Stael Catalogue raisonné des œuvres sur papier", Ides et Calendes, 2013. Described and reproduced under no. 47, p. 53. Sale 22 March 1998 - CALMELS CHAMBRE COHEN - Lot n°42 This drawing is one of Nicolas de Staël's very first abstract compositions. It was produced against an engraving background, as material conditions were precarious during the war. In 1941, having been demobilised from the Foreign Legion, the artist joined Jeannine Guillou, his partner, in Nice, in the free zone. De Staël made some decisive encounters on the Côte d'Azur, where many artists had taken refuge. The first of these was Félix Aublet, a painter, architect and decorator, who gave him odd jobs to help support himself and introduced him to a milieu of artists that he knew nothing about, opening his eyes to the art of his time and to militant modern art. He met Sonia Delaunay, Le Corbusier, Henri Goetz, Christine Boumeester, Marie Raymond, Fred Klein and Alberto Magnelli. Encouraged and guided by them, Nicolas de Staël experimented with non-figuration and produced a series of abstract pastels, which were immediately successful. Expert: Cabinet Maréchaux THE WORK CAN BE VIEWED BY APPOINTMENT AT THE EXPERT'S OFFICE IN PARIS UNTIL MONDAY 8 JUNE.
