Description
Attributed to Pierre ANDRIEU (1821-1892)
"Lion's Head
Plumb line drawing
18.2 x 14.7 cm (the sheet)
Bears the stamp of Delacroix's studio known as the "Andrieu stamp". The painter was Pierre Andrieu (1821-1892), a pupil and faithful collaborator of Eugène Delacroix, who had bequeathed him his original drawings for the Salon de la Paix, at the Hôtel de Ville (work destroyed), plus 15,000 fr., as well as sketches of the chapel at the church of St. Sulpice, a reclining lion, etc. Andrieu kept this inheritance all his life; he also acquired a number of other sketches by his master at Delacroix's sale. After his death, his heirs, probably in good faith, had the new seal (formerly L.838) made, which was then affixed to drawings by Andrieu, mistaken for Delacroix, and to real Delacroixes, mixed in with the Andrieus.
