Qadjar tile for lovers Iran, 19th century. Siliceous ceramic with moulded and polychrome decoration under a transparent colourless glaze. Height: 25.3 cm - Width: 16.7 cm This quadrangular tile depicts a pair of lovers, a falconer and a musician, in a landscape on a cobalt blue background, composed of stylised flowers, mountains and architecture, probably the Armenian churches of Isfahan. The upper part of the tile is bordered by a floral frieze on a white background. This tile is typical of those produced in the Qadjar period. The technique of underglaze painted decoration, which had fallen into disuse by this time, was once again favoured by potters from Isfahan who had settled in Tehran. Underglaze painted tiles were most often used in interiors. The figures are often depicted dressed in Safavid fashion, as shown by the two lovers on this tile. Bibliography : - Battles and horsemen.
