Description
A gold and enamel snuffbox, rectangular in shape with cut sides, decorated with translucent blue enamel on a guilloché background. The lid is decorated with an enamelled plaque depicting Annette and Lubin, after the painting by Pierre-Antoine Baudouin (1723-1769), framed by two Medici vases resting on their pedestals. The background is decorated with a stylised vase surmounted by a garland of flowers supported by two doves. Goldsmith: Guidon Rémond Gide & Co Swiss work, Geneva, 1792-1801. (Missing enamel). Height: 1.5 cm - Length: 9.1 cm Width: 4.4 cm - Gross weight: 109.06 g Annette and Lubin are the protagonists of one of the Contes moraux published by Marmontel in 1761. The original painting is in the Musée Cognacq-Jay in Paris (ref. A6371). Jean-Georges Rémond, originally from Hanau, became a renowned jeweller after moving to Geneva in 1783, where he founded his own company specialising in luxury items. From 1792 onwards, his partners - Joseph Guidon, David Gide, Laurent Guisseling and Jean-Noël Lamy - developed the firm "Guidon Rémond Gide & Co", which was formalised in 1796 and continued to bear the "GRG couronné" hallmark until 1801. The production of gold snuffboxes reached a high level of quality and innovation, thanks in particular to the use of refined techniques such as painting on a polished background, gold leaf work, enamel on guilloché, engraving and pearled borders. Today, these fine jewellery creations are held in major international collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum.
