Preparatory study with numerous variations for the 1889 painting *The Regatta Signal*, known from a Goupil heliogravure. On the same theme of regattas, in 1887 Clairin produced a design for a fan in Le Havre for Antoinette Faure, daughter of the future President of the Republic, Félix Faure. Antoinette Faure was a friend of Proust’s who asked him to complete the famous ‘Questionnaire’ (see the exhibition ‘Le XIXe siècle’, Talabardon and Gautier, 2011, no. 27, reprinted).
