Kindjal dagger Steel, horn, silver (partly nielloed) Central Asia, probably Dagestan, second half of the 19th century Overall length: 48.5 cm. This Kindjal dagger, originating from Central Asia, features a straight, double-edged blade, with an acid-etched decoration of foliage, calligraphy and two figures: a standing woman and a seated man holding a cup. It is made of hammered Damascus steel and has a deep central fuller. The inscription is a proverb translating as ‘Truth is enforced by the sword, whilst the powerless call for witnesses. ’ The horn hilt (with visible damage) is covered by a silver plate with nielloed plant motifs.
