Roman Kramsztyk, born into a Polish-Jewish family, began his art studies in Warsaw, then in Munich. He arrived in Paris in 1910, like many young people from Eastern Europe whose artistic vocation could only flourish through contact with the Parisian art scene.
He lived in Paris whilst making regular trips to his native country. There, he joined the NowaGrupa group. In Paris, he forged both personal and artistic ties with the Polish community, including the painter Kisling and the writer and gallery owner Adolphe Basler, whom he painted.
A painter of female nudes in a style very much in vogue in the 1920s, he was also a landscape painter, particularly when travelling in the south of France.
Our painting perfectly captures the sense of strangeness and poetry he brought to the villages of Provence, to the ancient stones of these secluded villages.
