Label on the reverse: ‘Georges Viau Collection’ and a handwritten label, partly illegible: ‘… 1927 at the … of Victor Hugo …’. 64.5 x 83 cm Provenance: -Private collection -Former Georges Viau Collection Exhibition: French Artists in Italy from Poussin to Renoir. Musée des Arts Décoratifs, May–July 1934. This work will be included in the Catalogue Raisonné of Prosper Marilhat, currently in preparation. We would like to thank Mr Jean-Marie Chauvin, author of the artist’s Catalogue Raisonné, who has kindly authenticated this painting, as well as the G. Viau Archives for the information they have kindly provided. Prosper Marilhat was one of the first French Orientalist painters to take part in a scientific expedition to the Middle East as early as 1831. He was celebrated as a great Orientalist painter around 1830, on a par with Eugène Delacroix. In 1835, he undertook the traditional tour of Italy, visiting in particular Tivoli, its temple and its waterfalls, so famous amongst painters travelling in Italy. The year 1836 proved very favourable for the painter, as one of his paintings was purchased by the Prince of Joinville. Furthermore, other paintings were sold to the French royal family of Orléans, who were then on the throne. Expert: Cabinet Chanoit Expertise
