Persian Shamshir Sabre Blade partly damascened with gold and inlaid with brass; handle made of steel and bone; leather scabbard over a wooden core with steel fittings Persia, 19th century Length 99 cm (with scabbard) The hilt of this shamshir-style sabre consists of bone plates and a gold-damascened steel guard. The scabbard is made of wood covered with leather embossed with stylised foliage and scrolls. The steel blade, slightly curved with a single edge and double blood grooves, is decorated on one side with three cartouches forming mandorlas (one featuring a feline motif, and two with calligraphic designs in brass inlay bearing the name of the maker, Asadullah Khalid). His signature was copied and affixed to magnificent, prestigious sabres right up until the 19th century to enhance their value. The last cartouche contains a line of poetry: ‘Sharper than Plato’s intellect is its blade, more deadly than the eyebrow of the beloved. ’ This verse is attributed to Mehsi Bey Shaqâqîn, an 18th-century Azerbaijani poet.
