Large kakemono in ink and colours on silk, depicting Hōnen-bō Genkū seated in meditation on a small, ornate platform, unwinding the long mala he holds in his hand, clad in a monastic robe and kesa, both finely decorated; the monk is flanked by three deities: Fudō-Myōō above his right shoulder, facing a six-armed form of Kannon seated in lalitasana—the royal posture of relaxation—upon a rock, the painting is dominated by the goddess Kannon standing on a lotus, above a large Sanskrit character inscribed within a medallion surrounded by clouds; lotuses dot the composition. The green silk border alternates between gilded motifs of the çakra, the wheel of the Dharma, and the visvavajra, the double vajra.
Hōnen-bō Genkū is the founder of Jōdo shū, the first school of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism.
