Description
A rare icon of Saint Simeon, the God-Bearer. Tempera on a gold ground, with a Greek inscription.
The oval-shaped icon, painted on wood, is set within a substantial polychrome and gilded carved wooden frame in the Italian style with architectural decoration, surmounted by a small oval icon depicting the Mandylion, crowned and flanked by two angels.
Restored in places and with some losses, but in good overall condition.
Greece or Cyprus, 18th century.
H. 18.5 x W. 11.5 cm (icon); H. 55 x W. 35 cm (frame).

An icon from the same workshop depicting Saint Charalampus (Greece, 18th century), from the A. G. Makris collection, was featured in the ‘Synaxis’ exhibition held at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow in 2010.
