Description
Vacheron & Constantin and Ferdinand Verger (1851-1928). Exceptional Art Deco Chinoiserie desk clock, in malachite, black onyx and diamonds, with an autonomy of eight days. Bearing an Ostertag plaque on the outer door. The collaboration between "VF" and "VC" began in 1875, when the first large-crown movements were delivered to Paris. In 1879, the partnership deepened when Ferdinand Verger became Vacheron's official agent in Paris. This close collaboration lasted for more than 60 years, until 1938. For our desk clock, the movement is by Vacheron & Constantin, the case by Ferdinand Verger and it was sold at Ostemag, Paris. 17-jewel movement, eight-day power reserve, 5 settings, signed Vacheron & Constantin and numbered 407561. Black lacquered silver case adorned with gold Arabic numerals. Orange enamel dial hand-painted with clouds and spring flowers, fine openworked hands set with diamonds. On each side, a finely carved malachite parakeet, mounted on an onyx base with malachite feet (accident to the base of the parakeets and re-gluing of the malachite). Bearing an OSTERTAG plaque on the outer door. Dimensions: 16.5 cm x 7.30cm x 14.5 cm high. Ferdinand Verger (1851-1928) founded the company and was a master watchmaker and jeweller. In 1879, he became French agent for Vacheron Constantin and, towards the end of the 19th century, his two sons joined the family business. Verger Frères were master craftsmen who worked with and supplied some of the greatest names of their time, including Cartier, Lecloche, Ostertag, Boucheron, Tiffany's, Black Starr & Frost and J.E. Caldwell. These pieces are not only time capsules of the long-forgotten era of Prohibition, jazz and voluptuous fashion, but they are also great examples of how craftsmanship, creativity and innovation can go hand in hand. It's in the same spirit that modern independents work today. We're not talking about timeless design, but 1920s design at the cutting edge of technology! Their masterpieces are among the most original creations of the Art Deco period, and they specialised in exceptional timepieces. The collaboration between Verger and Vacheron Constantin later evolved into a partnership, but they also worked for Cartier, Boucheron and other prestigious houses. The rarest and most refined Art Deco timepieces are hallmarked with a diamond bearing the initials "VF". On this particular example, the hallmark is on the inside of the case lid. (The roots of the tree can be clearly seen in the centre of the lozenge in the VERGER FRERE logo.)
