Ateliers J. BENOIT in Nancy. "Notre Dame des Sept Douleurs". Stained glass window in polychrome glass, grisaille, silver yellow, enamels, etc. The saint is shown standing, wearing a long cloak that reveals her heart pierced by seven swords, associating Mary with the suffering of her son Jesus in his mission of redemption... She stands out against a rich background of flowers and acanthus leaves. At the top, surrounded by the crown of thorns, is a pelican feeding its young (symbolising Christ's passion and the Eucharist). France by J. Benoit 1928 (small accidents on the blue edging) H. 190.5 cm. L. 62 cm. Sold with meeting facilities Expert : Mr François de LAVAISSIERE. From an important set of four stained-glass windows, made by Joseph Benoit (1871-1939) who was also associated with another famous Master glassmaker from Lorraine, Georges Janin. In 1921 he founded his own stained glass workshop in Nancy. From 1936 to 1957, his sons Henry and Pierre took over the workshop, which worked with painters such as Camille Hilaire and Antoine-René Giguet.
