Set of photographs of Nepalese officials.
Various techniques.
Early 20th century.
Albums of photographs of members of the Nepalese government and their families, which include most of the officials in this lot, are held by the British Library under number EAP166/2/1/3.
1- Portrait of Dev Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, 12th Prime Minister of Nepal (5 March - 27 June 1901). An inscription in Nepali and the number 3 can be seen on the back of the image (Wear).
2- Portrait of Chandra Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana. Chandra Samser Rana was the 13th Prime Minister of Nepal from 1901 until his death in 1929. He signed the Anglo-Nepalese Treaty of Friendship (Nepalese Independence) in 1923.
3- Portrait of Ranodip Singh Kunwar. Ranodip Singh Kunwar was the 10th Prime Minister of Nepal from 1877 to 1885 (assassinated in 1885).
4- Portrait of an official. At the bottom right of the image is the inscription "Herzog & Higgins, Mhow C.I.". Herzog and Higgins were English photographers whose studio was based in Mhow, in the state of Madhya Pradesh, between 1894 and 1921. During the period of the British Raj, the duo took many portraits of officials and covered important events.
