Description
COLOMBIA, Muisca culture
The Muisca raft, a replica of
Between 1200 and 1500 AD
In the centre of the piece sits a large figure of exceptional stature, believed to be the chief. He is surrounded by twelve other minor figures, carrying sticks, jaguar masks and shaman’s maracas. The Muisca raft was discovered in a cave in the goldsmiths’ district of Bogotá in 1856 by three peasants. It was found inside a ceramic vessel, modelled in the shape of a shaman seated in a contemplative pose, with his hand resting on his chin. It is on display at the Gold Museum in Bogotá.
