Description
ATELIERS POUSSIELGUE-RUSAND, based on a design by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. Second half of the 19th century. A pair of neo-Gothic candlesticks in gilded bronze. Each candlestick rests on a tripod base with leaf-adorned bird’s-foot legs, featuring bold, dynamic lines that terminate in large plant-motif scrolls. The central shaft rises vertically before flaring out into an openwork composition of symmetrical volutes reminiscent of an ornamental tree. H: 85 cm The candle arms extend across several levels and are topped by candle holders in the shape of blossoming flowers. The scrollwork is embellished with spiral motifs and decorative pine cones nestled within the volutes, accentuating the piece’s lush, plant-like character. At the centre, an enamelled four-lobed motif, adorned with a small cross, structures the composition before the upper arms converge towards a higher central light. The base and shaft are based on a design by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc created for Placide Poussielgue-Rusand (1824–1889) and dated 1862. This design, held in the Poussielgue-Rusand collection at the Médiathèque du Patrimoine et de la Photographie under the title ‘Small gilded copper altar candlestick’, features a single-light model (PM43361). The pair presented here constitutes a monumental reinterpretation of this design: the workshop of Placide Poussielgue-Rusand transformed the original model into a rich six-light arrangement, thereby amplifying the decorative flourish and liturgical solemnity of the composition. Placide Poussielgue-Rusand and Eugène Viollet-le-Duc are particularly renowned for their collaboration on the reliquary of the Holy Crown, created for Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.
