FRENCH SCHOOL, 1820 Achilles presenting Nestor with the prize for wisdom Oil on canvas 114.5 x 145.5 cm This painting was produced for the 1820 Prix de Rome competition. The Prix de Rome competition, which had been rather vague in its early days following the founding of the Academy (1648), eventually came to follow clearly defined stages, as set out in the regulations of the École des Beaux-Arts (see P. Grunchec, Les concours des Prix de Rome 1797–1863, Paris, 1986, I, p. 28 ff.).
