Description
This scene depicts the martyrdom of Saint Blandine, an episode from the history of the early Christians in 172 Painted canvas Second half of the 19th century H. 2 m – L. 3 m In an amphitheatre, before Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Saint Blandine is thrown to the wild beasts, notably lions, which did not attack her, and then to a bull, which killed her. This scene is inspired by a copperplate engraving by Jean Luyken (1649–1712), a highly talented artist and poet known for his depictions of religious persecution. The second half of the nineteenth century saw a rise in painted canvases at the expense of woollen and silk tapestries, the latter sometimes also referred to as ‘finti arazzi’. This technique has been known for a long time; in the 17th century, one example in Rome was the famous collection of ‘finti arazzi’ belonging to Cardinal Ottoboni.
