In an amphitheatre and before Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Saint Blandine is thrown to the
wild beasts, notably lions which did not attack her, and then to a bull which killed her. This scene is
inspired by a copperplate engraving by Jean Luyken (1649–1712), a highly talented artist and poet
known for his depictions of religious persecution.
The second half of the 19th century saw a rise in painted canvases at the expense of
woollen and silk tapestries, the latter sometimes also referred to as ‘finti arazzi’. This technique has been
known for a long time, and in the 17th century, one example in Rome was the famous collection
of ‘finti arazzi’ belonging to Cardinal Ottoboni.
