The subject of our painting is taken from Ovid’s *Metamorphoses*. Mercury spots Herse and her two sisters from the sky. He falls in love with Herse. The temple of Minerva is visible on the right. In Greek mythology, Mercury – known as Hermes in Greek – is the messenger of the gods. Swift and agile, he flies through the sky on his winged sandals. One day, whilst flying over the city of Athens, his gaze falls upon a young princess of great beauty: Herse, daughter of King Cecrops. Mercury immediately falls in love with her. He then decides to descend to Earth to meet her. But to reach Hersé, he must first pass by her sister, Aglauros. Jealous and greedy, she agrees to help him only if Mercury promises her gold. The god refuses to give in to this unjust demand. Aglauros, mad with jealousy, then tried to prevent Mercury from approaching Hersé. The gods, seeing her wicked behaviour and her heart filled with envy, punished her: she was turned to stone, frozen for ever. Freed from this obstacle, Mercury can finally be reunited with Herse. Their union is a happy one, and from their love a son is born, Cephalus, who will later become a famous hero. Expert: René Millet
