Description
A rare tympanon and its wooden carrying case, painted with a rich polychrome decoration featuring chinoiserie scenes, foliage, animals and grotesques, in the style of Jean Pillement. The soundboard, made of wood and gilded wood, is adorned with two rosettes. It features twenty-three four-stringed courses. The instrument rests on four legs and has a music rest concealed beneath its base. Probably a French piece from the 18th century. H_12 cm W_73.8 cm D_36.9 cm (tympanon). H_17 cm W_80.5 cm D_43 cm (case). A few minor chips and imperfections. This instrument is on display at our Paris premises, 33 rue de Montholon, Paris 9th arrondissement, until and including Thursday 10 September The tympanon is a stringed instrument belonging to the family of trapezoidal zithers. It was widely used amongst the European nobility from the 17th century onwards, reaching its peak in the 18th century before disappearing entirely during the French Revolution. The sound is produced by striking the strings, which are grouped in a heart-shaped arrangement, with a stick
