Description
IFUGAO, Hapao region, Philippines. Wood with a dark, ritual patina. Rice is central to the economic and spiritual life of the Ifugao people, who live in the mountains of central Luzon, in the Philippines. The region’s landscape is characterised by terraced rice fields carved into the mountainsides, whilst rice cultivation is associated with elaborate rituals designed to ensure the abundance and quality of the crop. Our ancient statue, known as a ‘Bulul’, depicts an ancestral figure traditionally placed in granaries to watch over the rice harvests and ensure their protection. It depicts a standing figure, with the arms detached from the body and the hands resting on the upper thighs. The strength and solemnity of the posture contrast with the gentleness emanating from the face, lending the work a presence that is both powerful and imbued with serenity. H.
