ERCKMANN CHATRIAN- SARREGUEMINES, early 20th century. The Blockade of Phalsbourg: extremely rare complete set of twelve talking plates. Fine earthenware printed and marked Sarreguemines on the back. Diameter: 22 cm Le Blocus de Phalsbourg tells the story of Moïse and Sorelé during the blockade of Phalsbourg. Erckmann and Chatrian may not have been free of anti-Semitic prejudice, but they were nonetheless tender in their depictions of Jews. Several of the plates in this series tell the story of this couple.
