Jacques Nestlé (1907–1991), an abstract painter of German origin born in Saarbrücken, settled in Paris, where he developed a lyrical and geometric body of work. Influenced by the Bauhaus, Cubism and masters such as Kandinsky and Miró, he explored colour, form and collage with spontaneous freedom. A modest man, he used to say: ‘I am neither a painter nor an artist; I am simply a man who paints.’
