Christa Winsloe Hatvany (1888–1944), a German-Hungarian sculptor and writer, remains an iconic figure in 20th-century art and lesbian visibility.
Born in Darmstadt, Germany, she studied sculpture against her family’s wishes at the Munich School of Arts and Crafts from 1909 onwards. There she developed a talent for bronze animal figures, which were successfully exhibited and sold. In 1913, she married the Hungarian baron Ludwig Hatvany, from whom she would later divorce following an unhappy marriage. Settling in Berlin, she continued to sculpt whilst also writing. Her most famous work, *Mädchen in Uniform* (1931), which was adapted for the cinema, sensitively depicts the love between two women in a strict boarding school. A bold novelist, she explored queer themes in *Das Mädchen Manuela* and *Life Begins*, whilst openly living out her relationships with women, notably Dorothy Thompson and later Simone Gentet.
Having sought refuge in France during the war, she was murdered in 1944 near Cluny along with her partner, probably by members of a militia. A free-spirited and courageous artist, Christa Winsloe embodies the struggle for artistic expression and lesbian identity in the face of Nazi oppression.
