Pierre-Eugène Clairin had close ties with Brittany, where he spent time from childhood onwards with the family of his uncle Georges Clairin (a painter and close friend of Sarah Bernhardt). In 1919, he joined Paul Sérusier’s studio at the Académie Ranson. There he met Maurice Denis and Édouard Vuillard, who introduced him to engraving and lithography. At the 1921 Salon d’Automne, he exhibited Breton landscapes, including his *View of Pont-Aven*, which bears witness to the influence of his teachers at the Académie Ranson. He discovered Pont-Aven shortly after the First World War, thanks to Paul Sérusier, who had encouraged him to come and stay in Brittany. Although a man of the upper middle class, and later elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, he married a local girl. Together with his friend Ernest Correlleau de Pont-Aven, he rented Gauguin’s studio in Lézaven until the death of his wife, who is buried in Pont-Aven cemetery. Expert: Hélène Bonafous-Murat
