Born in Quimper in 1891, Pierre Dubreuil lost his father at the age of one; his mother left Finistère and moved closer to her family in Morbihan, where he spent his childhood and adolescence. He attended secondary school in Vannes. He left Brittany for Paris in 1907 and settled in the Montparnasse district. In 1909, he joined Henri Matisse’s studio and, during this period, became friends with Marcel Gromaire, Jules Pascin and Per Krohg. A prolific painter, he also produced over 600 engravings. He was responsible for the mural decoration at the Paimpol School of Navigation, a project on which he worked alongside Jean-Émile Laboureur and Jean Frélaut. Until his death in 1970, he divided his time between his studio at the Villa Brune in Paris and his home in the Gulf of Morbihan.
