“This Breton couple, returning empty-handed from the market, their faces full of worry, their bodies leaning forward, focused on the effort of walking, seem to symbolise all the harshness and misery of their peasant existence. The use of dark colours and the simplicity of the egg tempera technique, which allows the canvas to show through, further emphasise the rough-hewn nature of the scene, already suggested by the austere landscape. The overall impression of poverty conveyed by the painting finds its finest expression in these exceptional pairs of clogs. However, through the authenticity to which it aspires, the simplicity of the means employed creates the beauty of the painting and the dignity of the figures. These figures are those of a monumental Flight into Egypt.”
Blandine Salmon in “Georges Lacombe: Sculpture – Painting – Drawings”, Charles and André Bailly, publishers, Paris, 1991
