Whilst Henry Moret’s name is chiefly associated with landscapes of Brittany, towards the end of his career the artist occasionally returned to the coast of his native Cotentin. Several works dated 1912 thus bear witness to a stay on the west coast of the English Channel, notably in Diélette and Siouville. This painting holds particular significance in the artist’s career. Born in Cherbourg, Moret seems, in the twilight of his life, to have returned to the shores of his childhood after several decades devoted to Brittany. *The Beach at Siouville* thus stands out as one of the most captivating examples of this return to his roots, where the light of the Cotentin meets the master’s subtle touch. The composition centres on two fishing boats beached on the foreshore at low tide. Behind them rise the imposing rocky outcrops characteristic of the Siouville coastline, whose warm tones of granite and seaweed contrast with the silvery blues of the English Channel. The vast sky is enlivened by light clouds, rendered with free and vibrant brushstrokes. This attention to atmospheric effects, the reflections on the water left by the tide, and the variations in light is one of the artist’s most recognisable hallmarks. Far from seeking to depict anecdotal scenes, Moret presents here a luminous vision of the Normandy coastline. The two discreet figures positioned near the boats serve as a reminder of human presence without diverting attention from the true subject: the interplay between the sea, the sky and the rock. Large pink and ochre rocks emerge from the sand at low tide. This jagged coastline, so dear to the painter, contrasts with the peaceful rhythm of the sky, captured between two gusts of wind.
