Henry MORET (1856–1913) The Shellfish Gatherers Oil on canvas, signed lower right 38 x 46 cm Provenance: - Galerie André Gombert, Le Blanc Mesnil - Acquired from the gallery by the current owner in 1989 Note: This work features on the cover of Rosamunde Pilcher’s novel, *The Shellfish Gatherers*, published in 1990 by Belfond We would like to thank Mr Jean-Yves Rolland for confirming the authenticity of this work, which will feature in the catalogue raisonné of Henry Moret currently in preparation. A certificate of authenticity from Mr Rolland will be issued to the purchaser. True to his love of the Breton coastline, Henry Moret depicts here a scene of shellfish gathering on a foreshore exposed by the tide. The composition is built around the meandering waterways left by the ebbing sea. The shimmering pools, the seaweed exposed at low tide and the expanses of sand form a vast network of colours in which blues, greens, browns and ochres interplay. His fine brushwork juxtaposes these refined colours. He excels at capturing the infinite variations of light on the damp sand. The artist accurately captures that particular moment when the sea temporarily reveals an ephemeral territory, offered up to the shore fishermen. These three figures bring the landscape to life without ever diverting attention from it. As is often the case with this artist, humanity takes a back seat to the evocative power of nature. The figures, sketched with a sparing use of detail, blend naturally into the landscape, of which they seem to form a part. Through this simple subject, deeply rooted in Breton coastal life, Moret once again demonstrates his remarkable talent for capturing the colourful harmonies and atmospheric effects of the western coastline.
