Description
Georges Hanna SABBAGH (1887–1951) The Bath or Venus Anadyomene, c. 1925 Oil on original canvas Unsigned With the stamp ‘ATELIER G.H. SABBAGH’ (on the reverse) 130 x 97 cm. Provenance: Private collection, Paris. During the 1920s, Sabbagh drew inspiration from the classical theme of Venus rising from the sea, which he adapted to contemporary tastes, innovating the conventions of depicting the bather. A pupil of Maurice Denis, Sabbagh was deeply attached to the Perros-Guirec region, which inspired him with the rise in popularity of seaside bathing in the aftermath of the Great War, following the introduction of the first women’s swimming event at the 1912 Olympic Games, and the widespread adoption of more form-fitting swimsuits, which allowed for greater freedom of movement. Several other compositions by Sabbagh on the theme of seaside bathing, dating from the 1920s, demonstrate the artist’s interest in the social advances of his time, notably a similar version held at the Musée des Années 1930. This work is probably the companion piece to a composition by Sabbagh that is identical in every respect and of the same format, but in which the bather is depicted nude, wearing a red cap.
