“Upon his arrival in Douarnenez, Désiré-Lucas painted the cliffs stretching as far as the Pointe du Raz. But it was on Belle-Île and Ouessant that he refined his technique for painting the rocks and the effects of light on the sea. [...] In 1920, [Marie Réol and Désiré-Lucas] took up residence near Goulphar, close to the famous Aiguilles de Port-Coton. Influenced by Monet’s vibrant brushwork, Désiré-Lucas painted the Aiguilles de Port-Coton. [...] The diagonal composition and stronger colours in the foreground, fading into the distance, reinforce the stormy effect created by the whites of the foam and a dynamic, Neo-Impressionist brushstroke.”
