Description
Paul Camille GUIGOU (1834–1871) Walk towards Aiguebrun. 1865 Oil on panel Signed and dated lower right 21.5 x 26.5 cm Provenance: Private collection, South of France A certificate from Madame Bonnici will be provided to the buyer. Regarded as one of the leading masters of 19th-century Provençal landscape painting, Paul Guigou left a profound mark on the history of regional art before his untimely death. Closely associated with the painters of the Barbizon School and the future Impressionists, his work—rare on the market due to his short career—is held in the most prestigious public collections, notably at the Musée d’Orsay. Guigou’s style is characterised by its precision and his mastery of the light of the Midi. With a preference for panoramic views, he excels in depicting the banks of the Durance, the Crau and the surroundings of Marseille. His brushwork highlights the striking contrasts between the white limestone rocks, the intense blue skies and the solitary silhouettes of travellers or washerwomen, as seen in this *Balade vers l’Aiguebrun*.
