Description
Jean-Baptiste OLIVE (1848–1936)
Church of Sainte-Marie-du-Rosaire in Venice
Oil on canvas
Signed lower right
49.5 x 73 cm
An undisputed master of the Marseille school, Jean-Baptiste Olive devoted his life to the pursuit of light. Whilst his signature style remains inextricably linked to the Provençal coastline and its sun-drenched white rocks, his travels to Venice opened up a new realm of artistic expression for him.
Far from the usual romantic clichés, Olive depicts La Serenissima with the same vigour as his Mediterranean seascapes. This view of the Church of Sainte-Marie-du-Rosaire bears witness to this visual impact: the brushwork is generous, rendered in a vibrant palette where the sun’s glare ricochets off the water and makes the building’s façades glow. A luminous and powerful work, which demonstrates the full modernity of his brushwork far from his native lands.
