Description
René SEYSSAUD (1867–1952) Shepherd and his flock in front of the farmhouse Oil on canvas Signed lower right 46 x 61 cm Provenance: - Private collection, Toulon A pioneer of Fauvism and a key figure in Provençal painting, René Seyssaud is renowned for having revolutionised the depiction of landscapes in the Midi. Having lived successively in the Vaucluse and the Bouches-du-Rhône, his work is now held in numerous national museums and is highly sought after by collectors of southern French art. Seyssaud is distinguished by a technique that was unique for his time, characterised by the use of a dense medium, worked in impasto and often applied directly with a palette knife. Eschewing academic detail, he captures the light of the South through pure, saturated and contrasting colours. His compositions – whether landscapes of Mont Ventoux, rural scenes or seascapes – are defined by their power and their modern use of colour.
