A leading figure of Neo-Impressionism alongside Seurat and Signac, Maximilien Luce is an icon of modern painting. Whilst his name immediately brings to mind Parisian urban scenes and Pointillism, his discovery of the Midi was to bring about a veritable revolution in his painting.
Introduced to the coast of the Var by his painter friends, Luce stayed in Saint-Tropez and then in La Ciotat, where he was captivated by the intensity of the Mediterranean light. This view of Le Tréport illustrates this period: abandoning the geometric rigour of pure Pointillism, he imbues this Norman scene with a much freer, broader and more dynamic touch.
