Provenance: Artist’s family
An internationally renowned contemporary Lebanese artist, Raouf Rifai has built up a striking body of visual work, now celebrated in museums and major collections across the Middle East and Europe. At the crossroads of art brut, pop art and Eastern traditions, he has succeeded in creating a unique pictorial language.
At the heart of his body of work, his famous ‘Darwiche’ series features the popular figure of the dervish – a true reflection of the man in the street – whom the artist endlessly reinvents with humour and tenderness. Working in acrylic, his technique is characterised by graphic black lines that structure blocks of saturated, explosive colours. Moving away from classical realism, he plays on the disproportions and expressiveness of the faces. His canvases, theatrical and rhythmic, immediately captivate the viewer with their chromatic power and narrative force.
