CHARLES V, the Wise (8 April 1364 – 16 September 1380).
KAROLVS * DI * GR – FRANCORV * REX. The king, crowned, standing beneath a Gothic canopy flanked by lilies, wearing chain mail; coat of arms with fleurs-de-lis over his chain mail, holding a sword and the sceptre of justice. A small ring near the pommel.
Rev. + XPC * VINCIT * XPC* REGNAT * XPC * IMPERAT.
A trefoil cross with an angled quatrefoil in the centre containing a small ring, flanked by two fleurs-de-lis and two small crowns. All within a pointed quatrefoil flanked by eight small lilies. Dy 360A.
Gold franc à pied, 20 April 1365 (weight 3.70 g).
Slightly cleaned. Off-centre on the reverse. Very good condition.
Note: Charles V, known as ‘the Wise’, was born on 21 January 1338 in Vincennes and died on 16 September 1380. He was King of France from 1364 to 1380 and the third monarch of the Valois dynasty.
