Description
Henri Michel Antoine CHAPU (1833–1891). “Berryer 1790–1868”. Bronze with a black patina, signed and engraved by the foundry FROMENT-MEURICE. A gift from Mr Bérard des Glajeux, a counsellor at the Court of Cassation, in March 1912. Presented on a red velvet plinth. Height: 62 cm – Width: 34 cm – Depth: 24 cm Related work: - a reproduction of the statue in the Salle des Pas Perdus at the Palais de Justice in Paris, created by the same artist. Note: Henri Michel Antoine CHAPU, one of the most sought-after and highly decorated sculptors of the Third Republic, depicts here Pierre-Antoine Berryer, a royalist lawyer and politician, in the midst of a courtroom speech. Described as the ‘Prince of Eloquence’ following his famous 1816 defence speech, which secured the acquittal of General Cambronne on charges of treason, his monument still stands proudly in the Salle des Pas Perdus at the Palais de Justice in Paris.
