Description
A pair of bouquets in a vase, made from finely arranged shells and bird feathers (with some damage and missing parts). Work by a salt-pan maker, 19th century. Height: 34 cm Note: First appearing in Batz-sur-Mer in the late 17th century to adorn church altars with floral bouquets, this craft of creating shell figurines in the likeness of salt workers gradually lost its religious function and became purely decorative by around 1820. It played an active role in the region’s economic boom until 1880 and also helped to spread the image and folk traditions of this community far beyond its borders.
