Description
Two flowering shrubs arranged in a finely woven oval wicker basket. The multicoloured flowers are made from meticulously assembled shells (with some imperfections and missing pieces). The piece is displayed beneath a large glass dome and rests on a mahogany-plated plinth (with signs of mould). Work by a salt worker, mid-19th century. Glassmaker’s label underneath: “A la Boule d’or, Guénégaud, next to the Hôtel de la Monnaie de Paris – Rigault, glassblower and manufacturer in Paris.” Height: 68 cm – Width: 35 cm Note: First appearing in Batz-sur-Mer in the late 17th century to adorn church altars with floral bouquets, this craft of creating shell figurines in the likeness of salt workers gradually lost its religious function and became purely decorative around 1820. It played an active role in the region’s economic growth until 1880 and also helped to spread the image and folk traditions of this community far beyond its borders.
